Evansville residents can expect hazy skies and health risks this weekend due to wildfire smoke from Canada, according to Accuweather.

Thousands Evacuated in Canada as Fires Burn Millions of Acres

There are reportedly more than 160 wildfires burning across western and central Canada. According to CNN, States of Emergency have been declared in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Approximately 17,000 people have been evacuated in Manitoba alone.

Wildfire Smoke Expected to Drift Into the Midwest

The smoke from the more than 1.58 million acres currently ablaze in Canada will soon make its way south. Meteorologists with AccuWeather say the smoke from the fires is expected to impact the Midwest this weekend.

Minnesota Issues Air Quality Alert as Smoke Moves In

To our north here in Indiana, the state of Minnesota has already issued an air quality alert for Thursday, May 29, and Friday, May 30, because of the smoke. Under a red air quality index, smoke may be visible, creating a hazy appearance to the air and reducing visibility. You may even be able to smell the smoke. Additionally, the air is harmful to breathe while under a red air quality index and may cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, tightness in the chest, and shortness of breath.

Evansville and Southern Indiana to See Poor Air Quality

For Evansville and the Southern Indiana area, Accuweather is forecasting impacts to air quality for the weekend. While today's air quality is "Fair," we move into the "Poor" designation for Friday - Sunday. This means the air in our community will be unsafe for those who suffer from sensitivities. Time outdoors should be limited, especially if you experience any irritation, chest tightness, or shortness of breath.

What You Can Expect from Wildfire Smoke in Indiana

The smoke may dim the sun and create colorful sunrises and sunsets. Where smoke is the thickest and reaching the surface, reduced visibilities, and a campfire smell may be evident at times.
