Thirty Seconds to Mars Unveil Lyric Video for New Song ‘Walk on Water’
It was announced early in July that Thirty Seconds to Mars were planning to release a documentary called A Day in the Life of America, with all of the the footage culled from a single 24 hour period - Independence Day. Now, a sneak peek of what to expect has come in the form of a lyric video for the band's new song, "Walk on Water," which is their first in four years.
The anthemic, electronically tinged track is full of sweeping music and even grander lyrics that fit the current political climate like, "Take a shot in the face of fear / Fist up in the firing line." Underneath the overlay of text is footage shot by both the band's crew and its fans.
Of the song, Jared Leto says, "'Walk on Water' is a song for all of us. It's a song about freedom, about persistence, about change and about fighting for what you believe in. It is a call to arms but also full of all the optimism and hope that is such an integral part of the American Dream."
The lyric video begins with the words, "Everything you are about to see happened on a single day in the United States of America. July 4th, 2017."
Images of President Trump campaigning, protest rallies with people holding up signs reading "resist," boxing sparring sessions, diving practices, American flags and culminating in blasts of firework displays which typically punctuate the holiday.
"Over 10,000 people submitted footage of a single day including 92 of our professional crews," says a statement released along with the song and video. "They filmed across the country in all fifty states plus Puerto Rico and D.C. and captured a portrait of this country that is absolutely beautiful, challenging and unforgettable."
"A very small selection of that footage you see here. The rest will be part of a documentary film (directed by Jared Leto) that is a companion piece to our brand new album."
The statement concludes by announcing a three tiered multimedia approach with, "The album. The film. The tour. Coming soon."
"Walk on Water" will make its live debut this weekend (Aug. 27) at the MTV Video Music Awards. Last week, portions of it were revealed in a college football hype video for ESPN which can be seen below.
Next month will see Thirty Seconds to Mars wrap up the final dates of their tour with Muse before heading off to South America to play Rock in Rio in Brazil.
