Fun-filled Adventure at Legoland Discovery Center in Columbus, Ohio: A Lego Lover’s Dream!

My son, Rollins, is a huge Lego fan and has been asking to visit Legoland Discovery Center in Columbus, Ohio. His Mimi gifted him with tickets for his birthday which have been burning a hole in his pocket. We finally took a little road trip this weekend and had an amazing time.  Located in the Easton Town Center area, there are many fun shops and interesting restaurants around the beautiful square.

The day began with an interactive video tour of a Lego factory where we could create our own mini-figures and learn how Legos are made. Did you know that the largest Lego factory is in a small town in Denmark that produces approximately 36,000 Legos per minute? That ends up totaling about 125 million a day with bricks ranging from the tiniest of studs to specialty pieces for interactive sets that move and light up.

The next door opened and we moved along to a dark set of castle hallways surrounded by Lego art, glowing torches, and “Mimi-sized” mini-figures.

We reached the center of the stone wall maze, to find the Kingdom Quest ride which is a journey to save a princess from trolls and skeletons.  Have you ever experienced the Gobbler Getaway at Holiday World? Very similar to that!

We circled around to ride it a few times before heading to the Creative Workshop.

Led by our wonderful Master-Builder instructor, Sebastian, we built monster trucks together and had the best time. As you can see from Mimi behind us, it required some concentration! Like lots of us in the class, Sebastian said he grew up playing with Legos from a very young age.  He dreamed about working for Lego and getting to build sets all day, and now he is making it happen.

The walls of the workshop were covered with characters and fun things built by kids who visit the Discovery Center. Rollins had to leave his mark by constructing this cute little guy. Sebastian gave him a home on the shelves with the other awesome Lego builds you can see behind them. 

There were bins of Legos all over this level including an area where you could build your own racecars and see how they fared on the tracks.  If at first, you don’t succeed, just keep adding wheels!

With a Duplo playland of tunnels and slides, Merlin’s Apprentice ride, and a 4-d movie theatre complete with surprise misting moments and wind as you “soar” through the air, I would say this section was geared toward kids 3-10, but grown-ups were having fun too!

The most hilarious part was the VR Lego Race experience.  Rollins was holding on for dear life as the goggles and motion seat really made you feel like you were racing on the tracks as volcanos, earthquakes, and tidal waves came crashing down all around. I could hear Rollins screaming bloody murder over the sound effects until he hopped off after the big drop. It was so much fun! I loved it.

My favorite part of the day though had to be Miniland. This was a room full of replica cities and Ohio landmarks that had interactive components like lighting chances and moving parts.

Created by a team of 15 expert model builders, including our friend Sebastian, this array of sculptures took over 5,000 hours to build.

I didn't know Spiderman lives there! The miniature cities had all kinds of surprises, you just have to see it for yourself.

Of course, we had to stop at the Lego store on the way out.  They had some incredible sets like the house from Home Alone, the Millenium Falcon, and even gorgeous Lego flower arrangements!

I highly recommend making the trip if you have a little one that loves Legos. Rollins said that on a scale of 1-10, it scored a 50, so that should tell you all you need to know! Plus, Columbus has all kinds of other cool places like the Columbus Zoo, and an awesome Children’s Science Museum, so you can make a long weekend out of it!
