Whether you grew up listening to classic rock from the 60s and 70s, or you were rocking out with the 80s glam bands or 90s grunge movement, I think at some point we have all dreamed of playing guitar. Better late than never, as the saying goes!

I am so excited to finally be learning to play guitar with Fret Zealot, and I'm excited to take you along for the ride. I even have a chance for you to win a guitar with a Fret Zealot LED system installed. Keep scrolling to find out how to enter.

The Early Years

I was the typical Midwestern band kid. I started learning to read and play music around 10 or 11 years old and I continued to play all through high school. I can read music and count time, and I played flute and piccolo in the school band. Music has always played an important role in my life.

Influences

I was the latch-key kid of a single mom and before I learned to drive, I spent a lot of time home alone. I grew up listening to the likes of Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, and Pete Townshend. When I got into high school in the mid-90s, I showed up late to the grunge party but I fell in love with Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Stone Temple Pilots. It was around the same time that I discovered Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, The Offspring, and Blink182. Music was and has continued to be my constant companion.

Trying to Play Guitar

In the early 2000s, I decided I wanted to learn to play guitar. I got a really pretty purple electric guitar, and a ton of magazines, and I even bought a copy of Guitar for Dummies. Unfortunately, my ability to read music did not lend itself to helping me learn tablature, and without the cash to pay for lessons, playing guitar eventually fell to the wayside. Eventually, after collecting dust for some time, I sold my guitar to cover part of my rent.

A New Way to Play

Fast forward two decades, and here I am again with that itch to finally mark "learn to play guitar" off my bucket list. And while I have the cash to pay for the lessons that I couldn't afford in my 20s, I now find myself without the time. With a schedule like mine, it can be challenging to coordinate lessons with someone else's schedule but I'm excited to say that I have found an incredible workaround!

Let Me Tell You 'Bout My Best (Musical) Friend

I have discovered Fret Zealot, a revolutionary new way to learn to play guitar - or expand your skills if you already know how. Fret Zealot combines music lessons (if you need them) with an amazing interactive hardware platform. The optional LED system that you can connect to your fretboard really makes finding the right strings and frets simple. With the free Fret Zealot companion app, I can control everything easily from my fingertips.

Check out my unboxing video to see my setup.

Courses and Songs

For someone like me who is just learning, there are hundreds of courses and lessons available from some of the greatest guitar instructors in the world.

You’ll probably see some familiar names as you scroll through the available courses. For example, Trey Xavier from Gear Gods teaches RelationShapes – the best course for learning scales for soloing. Or check out Henry Olsen’s Beginner Blues lessons to master the basics of blues chords, scales, and rhythms. We have courses on Gypsy jazz, strumming patterns, lead guitar, riffs, oldies, rockabilly, and SO much more!

For those who don't necessarily need the basics, there are over 80,000 tablatures available, and using the Fret Zealot LED system, you will be able to play along with the right strings and the right frets every time. There's even an AI feature that will take you through your favorite songs at your own pace.
