The Golden Girls Lobster Mold: Innuendo or Innocent Decor?

The other day, a friend of mine shared a photo featuring a wall of copper molds. It was a collection of all different shapes and sizes that she had helped her sister hang. She has everything from a fish to a squirrel to a house and a sailboat. However, there was one missing.

If you're a Golden Girls fan, you know exactly which one I am talking about. The...lobster. Yeah, it's a...lobster! Sure! Whoever designed it did not have their mind in the gutter like the rest of us, but this particular mold became iconic because it lived in a kitchen we will always cherish.

I remember The Girls hanging their lobster on the right-hand side of the set like you saw in that video. Right over Sophia's shoulder as she stirred a bowl or something. Here it is again:

It also hung over the sink and window area for a time, as shown here:

Hilarious! From what I've researched, the set designer did not hang this crustacean with any innuendo in mind. Snopes even investigated this claim and went so far as to purchase a reproduction for a side-by-side comparison.

Although Blanche and the ladies often had conversations about sassy things, that lobster is up there because it goes along with the other molds displayed on the walls. This was a common trend in the 70s and 80s and again today. There were even recipes for making special seafood-inspired jellos in it. Some of them seem pretty gross, but this brave gal has tried some of them. Here is the Tuna Salad Jello. Tums not included.

September of last year marked the 40th anniversary of The Golden Girls. As the years go by, I think those of us who are fans love it more and more. My 12-year-old even thinks they are hilarious. He also thinks that my matching kitchen decor is pretty funny too.

Because I love to decorate with thrifted finds, you'll often find me browsing an antique mall. A couple of years ago, I found a matching copper lobster mold, which I just HAD to have. It hangs in a place of honor in our kitchen. I don't think I'll be making tuna salad jello any time soon, but it makes me smile every time I see it!
