If you've ever thought about taking an ATV out on the road in Henderson, there's an important update you'll want to know about.

The Henderson Police Department says certain special purpose vehicles, including ATVs, can now be operated on public roadways, but there are some key requirements before that can happen.

ATVs Now Allowed With Requirements

According to Henderson Police, the change means ATVs can now be driven on city streets, but they must first be inspected, licensed, and insured.

In other words, "street legal" doesn't happen automatically.

Vehicles must meet specific safety standards and pass an official inspection before they're allowed on the road.

What Makes An ATV Street Legal

The city shared a breakdown of what's required, and it's more than just basic equipment.

Some of the requirements include:

  • Headlights and brake lights
  • Turn signals
  • Mirros
  • A horn
  • A windshield or eye protection
  • A roll bar or roll cage
  • Seatbelts
  • Proper tires and braking system
  • A visible license plate

These requirements are designed to make sure the vehicle can safely operate alongside regular traffic.

Important Safety Reminders

Even with the rule change, Henderson Police are emphasizing that safety should still come first.

ATVs are smaller and less visible than standard vehicles, which can make them harder for other drivers to see.

Officers are reminding drivers to:

  • Wear seatbelts
  • Use turn signals
  • Stay in the right lane unless turning
  • Yield to faster-moving traffic

Anyone under the age of 18 is also required to wear a helmet at all times while riding within city limits.

One Important Exception

It is also worth noting that golf carts are not included in this change and are still not allowed on city streets.

Odd Kentucky Laws You Probably Didn't Know Were Still on the Books

Maybe lawmakers just assumed these were no longer valid since most of them are so silly.
