General Motors has issued recalls affecting 325,000 GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado pickup trucks with 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engines and optional engine block heaters, according to Consumer Reports. Engine block heater are used to pre-heat the engine during colder temperatures to make it easier to cold-start the trucks. There is a potential for fire due to a possible short in the heater block cords or terminals placing the the vehicles at risk. GM has reported no known accidents, injuries or fatalities as a result of the fire risk although there have been 19 reports of such fires. The recall impacts the following years, makes & models:

  • 2017 to 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500
  • 2017 to 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 heavy-duty
  • 2017 to 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty
  • 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 4500, 5500, and 6500 commercial trucks.

GM has revealed that they are still working on a remedy to this problem and they have not released when they plan to contact consumers of the vehicles affected by this recall.

The recall # from GM is N182206310 and the recall # from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is 19V328.
