A new data-driven study is putting one Indiana city in the national spotlight, and not for a reason anyone is celebrating.

According to a new report from WalletHub, Fort Wayne ranks among the most overweight and obese cities in the United States, landing at No. 20 overall out of 100 major metro areas analyzed.

But one specific stat stands out even more.

Fort Wayne Ranks No. 2 In One Key Category

Out of all cities studied, Fort Wayne ranks No. 2 in the nation for the highest percentage of obese adults.

That ranking is part of WalletHub’s broader analysis, which examined three main areas: obesity and overweight rates, related health consequences, and access to food and fitness resources.

In total, the study examined 19 different metrics, including physical activity levels, access to healthy food, and long-term health risks.

Why This Matters Beyond Just Rankings

This isn’t just about a number on a list.

Across the U.S., nearly 42% of adults are considered obese, and the impact goes far beyond individual health. WalletHub estimates obesity-related medical costs reach around $190 billion each year, with billions more lost due to missed work and reduced productivity.

In Fort Wayne’s case, the ranking reflects a combination of factors that many communities across the Midwest are facing, including access to healthy foods, lifestyle habits, and broader health challenges.

How WalletHub Measured “The Most Overweight Cities”

To build the rankings, WalletHub compared 100 of the largest U.S. metro areas using:

  • Obesity and overweight rates in adults and children
  • Health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease
  • Access to parks, fitness options, and healthy food
  • Physical activity levels and overall lifestyle data

Each city received a weighted score based on those categories, with higher scores indicating greater overall risk.

A Bigger Picture For Indiana And The Midwest

While this study highlights Fort Wayne specifically, it also reflects a broader trend seen across parts of the Midwest, where access, affordability, and lifestyle factors can all play a role in long-term health outcomes.

At the same time, experts point out that awareness is a key first step, and data like this can help communities better understand where improvements are needed.
