Why So Many People Are Googling Text Slang

According to the study, these abbreviations are trending because people don’t actually know what they mean.

Researchers analyzed Google search data and found that many of the most popular acronyms are also the most confusing, with users frequently searching phrases like “what does this mean in text.”

And it’s not just new slang that's causing confusion. Some abbreviations are evolving, like “PMO,” which has shifted from meaning “put me on” to “p-sses me off” depending on context.

Texting Shortcuts Might Be Hurting Conversations

There’s another surprising takeaway.

The study points to research showing that using abbreviations in messages can actually make people seem less sincere and less engaged, even among younger users who use them the most.

In other words, typing everything out might actually get you better responses.

What This Says About How We Communicate Now

Text slang is constantly changing, and what’s popular today might mean something completely different tomorrow.

For now, though, if you’ve ever had to secretly Google a text before replying, you’re in very good company.
