More cinnamon products have been recalled due to potential lead contamination.

Why the Cinnamon Recall Keeps Growing

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded its ongoing cinnamon recall. This is the fourth expansion of the nationwide recall, which began in March 2024 and was broadened again in July, and even more products were added to the recall in November 2024.

What Products Are Impacted Now

In the latest expansion, the FDA has included Jiva Organic ground cinnamon after samples collected at a retail location were found to contain elevated levels of lead.

The FDA warns that consuming the affected products could contribute to elevated levelschild of lead in the blood, which poses the threat of potential long-term health risks. At this time, no illnesses or adverse events have been reported. However, the agency is urging consumers to immediately stop using and discard the recalled cinnamon products.

Because cinnamon has a long shelf life, the FDA recommends checking pantries and spice racks for the affected products.

The Dangers of Lead Exposure

Whether through food or environmental contact, exposure to lead is especially concerning for young children. Even low-level, repeated exposure over time can cause neurological effects, including learning difficulties, behavioral problems, and reduced IQ.

The FDA notes that while ground cinnamon is not marketed exclusively to children, it is often used in foods that they consume regularly. In 2024, a number of apple sauce products were recalled because lead-contaminated cinnamon was included in their ingredients.

FDA’s Ongoing Efforts to Protect Consumers

The recall is part of the FDA’s Closer to Zero initiative, which aims to reduce childhood exposure to harmful contaminants such as lead. Consumers who suspect they’ve been exposed to unsafe levels of lead are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider.
