One of my favorite things to do when I'm traveling is to scope out the covered bridges. I think they are incredibly beautiful and really take us back to another time.

A fringe benefit of my trip to Mount Rushmore ten years ago (good Lord, TEN years) was coming back through Iowa and making my way to Winterset, the small town in the central part of the Hawkeye State where The Bridges of Madison County was filmed.

That county is riddled with beautiful old covered bridges which, by the way, aren't the easiest things in the world to find. But I found one that was featured prominently in the film. And that's the Roseman Bridge:

I don't know what happened to the ones I took, unless that was too many smartphones ago and they're gone. But that's the bridge--complete with all kinds of graffiti messages, many to Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep.

It still stands today.

But, sadly, a beautiful old covered bridge in Washington County, Kentucky no longer does.

Fire has destroyed the 150-year-old Mount Zion covered bridge:

I've been there, but it was a long time ago. And maybe it's this bridge that got me so fascinated with them in the first place.

And it looks as if the Washington County Sheriff's Office might be concerned that someone started the fire, based on their request for any further information.

What a shame.
