‘Logan’ Review: One Last Ride for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, And It’s a Good One

The first X-Men movie opened on July 14, 2000. A child born early that year would have just turned 17 by the time the tenth entry in the X-Men series, Logan, hits theaters next month. That is fortunate – viewers are going to need a driver’s license to get into this movie, which possesses the hardest R rating of any American superhero movie in history. In the past, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine would swing his razor-sharp adamantium claws and bad guys would simply fall to the ground. There was never any visible evidence of his brutality. There’s more graphic violence in Logan’s first scene – severed limbs, gruesome disembowlings – than in all of the other of the Wolverine and X-Men movies combined.

My Favorite Monster: That Handsome Devil Nightcrawler [Fantasy Week]

Ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?

That question, posed by Jack Nicholson's Joker in the 1989 Batman movie, comes across as an esoteric threat in that context; a destabilizing glimpse into the mind of a madman. Yet the exact same question asked by the X-Men character Nightcrawler would seem like an invitation to possibly the most romantic night of your life, and you'd probably be swept off your feet. If Nightcrawler is a devil, he makes it look good --- perhaps just as much as the Joker makes clowns look bad.

I Am Eating Everything on White Castle’s ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Menu

The X-Men villain Apocalypse is like something out of Darwin’s nightmares. A devout believer in the most twisted form of evolution, he repeatedly tests the mutants of the Marvel Universe. The weak are culled. Only the strong survive.

Bryan Cranston Still Wants to Play ‘X-Men’ Villain Mr. Sinister

Every comic book studio has the thing they do that frustrates fans. Marvel refuses to give the Black Widow her own spin-off movie; the DC Cinematic Universe keeps selling us on a version of Superman that breaks necks and gets freaky in bathtubs; 20th Century Fox casts incredible actors and buries them beneath layers of makeup and prosthetics. The last one is particularly frustrating when a great actor all-but shouts that he’s cool with hours in the makeup trailer and they still don’t seem to have a place for him.

‘X-Men’ Director Bryan Singer Wants to Take the Next Sequel to Space, Wink Wink

Producer Simon Kinberg recently revealed that the next X-Men sequel will take place during the ’90s, which is fairly unsurprising given that it follows the decade-by-decade pattern of the recent trilogy. That doesn’t tell us much about their plans for the next chapter of the X-Men saga, but Bryan Singer has put forth an idea that may give us a hint about where the story is heading.

The Artist’s Artist: The Best Stuart Immonen Art

Stuart Immonen is an artist’s artist. In fact, that’s probably not going far enough. It’s probably more accurate to say that he’s an artist’s artist’s artist. That’s not easy to say, but it’s not easy to have a career like Stuart Immonen, so he’s earned it.

With the arrival of the fantasy/science-fiction epic in the making Empress, his new creator-owned book with writer Mark Millar, there’s no better time to take a look back at his incredible body of work with a collection of some of his best covers and splash-pages.

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Trailer: The End Is Nigh for Marvel’s Mutants

I’m an old enough nerd to remember when the first X-Men movie came out in theaters. At that time, comic books were not the number one driver of all things in popular culture. Bryan Singer’s X-Men certainly featured all the comic’s beloved heroes and villains, but there did seem like there was a concerted effort to tamp down some of their comic-book-ness. Everyone dressed in black. There was no spandex. The story was grounded in weighty real-world themes like prejudice and vengeance. It was the X-Men you knew, but watered down just a bit. It was a rum and coke, not a shot of gin. X-Men: Apocalypse, in comparison, looks like a bottle of Beefeater.

Report: ‘Fantastic Four’ Movie Rights Back at Marvel, New Movie Coming in 2020

Yesterday, we learned that 20th Century Fox had worked out a new accord with Marvel permitting the studio to ferry one of its hottest properties into the lucrative land of milk and honey that is television. Fox has announced plans to develop two shows spun off from their X-Men franchise, one about an elite organization of mega-rich mutants called Hellfire and another about David Haller, a.k.a. the son of Charles Xavier, a.k.a. Legion. A new report from Den of Geek (still awaiting confirmation from Marvel) suggests that there may be an unknown flip side to this deal that would place The Fantastic Four, one of Marvel’s most iconic properties, back in their portfolio with another big-screen project to follow.

The 10 Greatest Superhero Movie Villains of All-Time

Without a great adversary, what good is a superhero? Without someone to punch in the face, Batman would just be some rich schmuck driving around in a weird-looking tank. Let’s bring on the bad guys and give them their moment in the sun. With Avengers: Age of Ultron introducing another memorable baddie in the form of James Spader’s titular metallic menace, let’s take some time to run down the 10 greatest superhero movie villains of all time.
