On Saturday, May 13, letter carriers across Indiana will participate in the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The event, which is now in its 31st year, is the largest one-day food drive in America. Letter carriers will be collecting donated non-perishable food items left in bags at mailboxes for local food banks.

The Timing of the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is Critical

The USPS says that the timing of the food drive is really important as most donations to pantries and food banks take place in November and December during the big holiday seasons. By this time of year, those resources are in short supply as the pantries and food banks head into summer - a time when many of those with school-aged children are not able to rely on the school lunch and breakfast programs.

Currently, more than 35 million Americans are unsure where their next meal is coming from. More than twelve million are children who feel hunger’s impact on their overall health and scholastic performance. Additionally, nearly 5.2 million seniors over age 60 are food insecure, with many who live on fixed incomes often too embarrassed to ask for help.
