Ford is throwing us a curve ball on this one.

On November 17th Ford unveiled to the world the first ever Mustang Mach-E.  It is an electric version of the famous sports car, but also it's the first ever 4-door vehicle to share the Mustang name. It's had many people asking however, why are we giving this completely new vehicle the Mustang name?

In the unveiling of the Mustang Mach-E  Executive Chairman of Ford, Bill Ford, said the reason they gave the Mustang Mach-E the iconic Mustang name is because the performance.  He always wanted to meld the performance of a fast sports car, with the energy saving properties of an electric car.  And they've been able to do that with the Mach-E, in fact it's said the Mach-E can go from 0-60 in mid 3 second range with zero emissions. If you want one, it'll be out in late 2020.

*Pictured above is my dad's 1969 Mach 1 (although it's missing the Mach 1 stripes...dad get on that) along with my Mustang, a 2003 V6.*

One thing you may not know about me, is I'm a huge fan of muscle cars.  I grew up with a dad who is a mechanic, and to this day STILL owns his first car.   His first car is a 1969 Mach 1 Mustang that he completely restored. It went from being on blocks to now being a show car. Growing up I spent almost every weekend going to cruise ins and car shows with my dad, so a love of Mustangs has just always been a part of me.  When I was 22 I finally got my own Mustang, a 2003 V6. I  was in college at the time so I couldn't afford a new Mustang, let alone a very fast one, but man I loved that car. After having it a few years,  it needed some work, and I needed a more economical vehicle so I traded it in.  I miss my Mustang, and can't wait for the day I can own one again (only we're getting a much bigger engine next time)!

So to say I was slightly disappointed that they labelled an SUV with the Mustang name is an understatement.  I know Mustang is no stranger to changes to the body style (hello fox body), but it's always been known as 2-door sport car.  To now label a 4-door SUV with the Mustang name just seems off to me.

After watching the full world debut from Ford of the Mustang Mach-E I have to admit the new style is sleek, and they made an SUV look sporty. It's a good looking car, I can't knock it for that.  I almost feel like they could have added it to the Mustang family without calling it a Mustang. Why not just call it the Mach-E?  I can dig the electric aspect of it, I like that they've found a way to keep performance while also being friendly to the environment, and I'm all for a Mustang with an electric engine.  It's just the body style to me is not a Mustang.

But hey, that's just my two cents on it.  I personally have a crossover SUV now and I love it, so while I say all this, I actually wouldn't mind owning one of these (in a few years when they're used and I can afford one haha)!  The part of me that enjoys having a more practical car, loves the idea of a really sporty SUV.

So what do you think about the Mustang Mach-E?
