SPOILERS for Thor: Ragnarok follow.

Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster is one of the highlights of Thor: Ragnarok, stealing every scene he was in and delivering even his weirdest lines with that singular Jeff Goldblum gravitas. He runs Sakaar’s arena, in which he pits the galaxy’s greatest heroes against each other in fighting tournaments — that is, until Thor comes along and starts a Spartacus-style revolt.

Unlike in Spartacus, the revolt succeeds, and one of Ragnarok’s mid-credits scenes features the Grandmaster crawling out of his getaway ship to face the wrath of a bunch of scavengers. He handles it well, but there’s a sense that we’re only seconds away from watching all these giant aliens tear him to pieces. Taika Waititi revealed to Collider that he initially filmed a credits scene with a more hopeful fate for the Grandmaster that had him and his bodyguard Topaz escaping on Thor’s giant spaceship with the rest of Asgard.

We were determined to not have too many of them. The thing [Loki and Thor encountering Thanos’ giant spaceship], that was the thing we did in reshoots. It was a last minute decision. And the other thing at the end, with The Grandmaster, was something we shot on Gold Coast that was something I planned for a long time. It was either going to be that or it was going to be Topaz and Grandmaster stowing away on the ship at the end.

He actually did shoot that alternate scene, with Goldblum and Rachel House throwing a couple blankets over their heads and sneaking into the crowd.

That could be on the DVD in the deleted scenes, those two in the crowd of the Asgardians and he pushes through and goes, ‘I’ve never heard of this Earth place but… We got to keep a low profile.’ And they kind of put these blankets over their heads and disband into the crowd.

That would be an awesome DVD extra, and I really hope that there are more delightful Goldblum deleted scenes and bloopers from this movie. Hopefully the Grandmaster survives his encounter with Sakaar’s finest warriors to maybe have a scene with his brother the Collector in Infinity War. Fingers crossed.
