If it's on the internet it must be true, right?

Eagles on Long Island

In a super bizarre pretend news story Tri-State Beet is at it again! the Tri-State Beet is a satire news page on Facebook, that has some stories that are almost convincing and usually provide a good laugh. On Saturday they posted a story about an eagle killing a goose at Mesker Park Zoo and saying the zoo wanted to warn pet owners about a flurry of eagles preying on small animals for food in our area.

Good news is, none of that is true. The geese at the zoo are doing just fine, and there's no "flurry of eagles" snatching up your pets. Per the Indiana Department of Natural Resources eagles typically eat fish, so unless your pet is an outdoors goldfish, I wouldn't worry too much.

Here's the post that went crazy from the Tri-State Beet's facebook page garnering over 1,000 shares:

Wild Eagle Kills Goose at Mesker Park Zoo
October 5th, 2019 6:15pm

EVANSVILLE, IN ( BEET ) - Evansville and zoo officials warn pet owners about a flurry of eagles preying on small animals for food in the Evansville area.

Zoo officials knew something was wrong when they heard loud squeals coming from the Mesker Park lake area Saturday evening. At about 5:30 p.m., they found a wild eagle atop of a resident goose.

Southern Indiana's population of once-endangered bald eagles has flourished in the past year — with a record number of young hatched during the 2019 breeding season, state wildlife officials reported.

12,000 eagles were hatched this year, topping the previous high of 400 in 2016.

“We continue to see phenomenal growth of Southern Indiana's bald eagle population,” said Harry Jacobson, bald eagle management coordinator for the Indiana Eagle Department.

"As the weather changes we think you'll see a flurry of dog, cat and small animals assaulted from the air. It's safe to say it's time to hide your dogs, hide your cats and hide your small animals Southern Indiana."

If you want a good laugh, the Tri-State Beet is a good follow to help your Facebook newsfeed feel a little less serious, however just remember it's only entertainment!
