Just because Disney and Marvel were able to work out an agreement to jointly create more Spider-Man movies that will exist inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t mean that Marvel controls the character outright — or that it gets the rights to the earlier Spider-Man movies.

For example: If you’ve perused Disney+, you may have noticed that its Marvel library has a few notable holes — including both of the Tom Holland Spider-Man films. That’s because while Marvel co-produced those movies, they were distributed and released and remain controlled by Sony. Theoretically, Disney could purchase the rights to include them on Disney+ from Sony, but then they’d have to pay them for it. And it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen anytime soon.

Disney+’s head of content Ricky Strauss told The Verge that there are currently no plans to feature Homecoming or Far From Home on the service:

We love our friends at Sony, but we don’t have any plans to have the live-action Spider-Man movies on Disney+. We will have all the Spider-Man animated shows that we did so they’ll be on there under the Marvel banner. But who knows what can happen in the future?

It’s been great getting to see Spider-Man interact with the rest of the Marvel heroes in Captain America: Civil War and the last two Avengers movies — and all three of those films are streaming on Disney+ if you need a Tom Holland fix. But this does also show that this Spidey agreement does have negatives, namely that Disney+ will never have a complete MCU collection unless Disney and Sony make some kind of deal about those earlier movies. Given that they just came to a new agreement about Spidey, unless they included deal points specifically about Disney+, it could be quite a few years before this is even a possibility.
