A new national study suggests Kentuckians are not exactly living their best lives.

According to the 2026 WalletHub Happiness by State rankings, Kentucky ranks No. 43 out of 50, placing it among the least happy states in the country.

That puts the Bluegrass State near the bottom for overall life satisfaction.

How WalletHub Measures Happiness

Happiness may feel subjective, but WalletHub says it can be measured.

The annual study evaluates all 50 states across three key dimensions:

  • Emotional and Physical Well-Being
  • Work Environment
  • Community and Environment

Researchers analyzed 30 different metrics, including depression rates, income growth, unemployment rates, productivity levels, and access to physical and mental health care.

Each metric is graded on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing maximum happiness.

Where Kentucky Struggles

In 2026, Kentucky received an overall score of 43.25, ranking 43rd nationwide.

Breaking it down further:

  • Emotional and Physical Well-Being Rank: 42
  • Work Environment Rank: 47
  • Community and Environment Rank: 30

While Kentucky performed better in community and environment, it struggled significantly in work environment and emotional well-being metrics.

How Other Regional States Rank

Kentucky is not alone near the bottom.

West Virginia finished last at No. 50, while Louisiana and Arkansas rounded out the bottom three.

At the top of the list, Hawaii ranked No. 1, followed by Maryland and Nebraska.

Why Location May Matter

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo says where you live can play a major role in overall happiness.

The happiest states tend to offer strong economies, better work-life balance, access to quality health care, and more leisure time.

While individual mindset certainly matters, broader economic and environmental conditions also impact satisfaction with life.

According to WalletHub’s broader findings, only 44 percent of Americans say they are very satisfied with their lives.

For Kentucky, the numbers suggest there is room for improvement.
