EVSC’s Soft Start Schedule and Other Important Dates for 2026-27

It may be hard to believe, but the first day of school is almost here for students in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation. And just like last year, EVSC is bringing back its "soft start" approach to help make the transition back to the classroom a little easier for everyone.

How the EVSC Soft Start Schedule Works

Rather than having every student walk through the doors on the same day, the district will once again stagger the first week of school. This gives teachers and staff the opportunity to spend more one-on-one time with students, answer questions, and help calm those inevitable first-day nerves before the entire student body returns.

EVSC's First Week Attendance Schedule

The 2026-27 school year officially begins with teacher work days on August 6 and 7, allowing staff time to prepare classrooms and put the finishing touches on everything before students arrive.

Then comes the phased student start:

• August 10-11: Students with last names K through Z will attend school.
• August 12-13: Students with last names A through J will begin.
• August 14: All students will attend together, marking the official start of the new school year.

The soft start has become a popular way to ease students back into their routines after summer break. Smaller class sizes during those first few days allow teachers to build relationships more quickly, explain classroom expectations, and help students get comfortable in their new surroundings.

Important EVSC Breaks to Remember

Parents can also start planning ahead for the major breaks throughout the school year. Students will enjoy time off for Labor Day on September 7, Fall Break from October 12-16, Thanksgiving Break from November 25-27, Winter Break from December 21 through January 1, and Spring Break from March 22-26.

Staff Development Days and Asynchronous Learning

There are also several scheduled staff development days during the year. While students won't report to school on those dates, they will complete asynchronous assignments from home. Those days are October 28, January 4, and March 17.

Additional days off include Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 18 and Presidents' Day on February 15.

Looking ahead to the end of the school year, EVSC has classes wrapping up on May 28, with high school graduation ceremonies scheduled between May 26 and May 28.
