The History of Memorial Day

Memorial Day has been around for over 150 years, going back to May 30, 1868, when Major General John A. Logan, the leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance. It was originally called "Decoration Day" since the tradition was to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flags, flowers, and wreaths.

In the following years, many cities and states began to recognize Memorial Day as a legal holiday. Finally, 103 years later, in 1971, Congress made Memorial Day a national holiday, to be observed on the last Monday in May each year.

Memorial Day Isn't a "Happy" Kind of Holiday

It has become a tradition to wish people a 'Happy' holiday - Happy Mother's Day, Happy Father's Day, Happy 4th of July, etc. Memorial Day, however, really isn't one of those kinds of days. Remember, the day is meant to honor the courage and sacrifice of soldiers who have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, so we're not really celebrating anything. Just be mindful of what the day means to those who have lost loved ones in the service. Have a great time, enjoy the day, but most importantly, remember what it's all about.
