New Variable Speed Limits Will Hopefully Create Smoother Commutes for Indiana Drivers
Get ready for smoother drives on the southeast side of Indianapolis! Starting on or after Tuesday, Sept. 10, motorists traveling on I-465 will notice something new—variable speed limits (VSLs) designed to improve your drive and make travel safer.

So, what exactly are VSLs? These smart speed limits will change in real-time based on traffic, weather, construction, and even accidents. The idea is simple: when conditions are calm, the speed limit stays higher; when things get busier or more challenging, it lowers, but only in small increments of 5 mph. This means you’ll experience fewer stop-and-go moments and a smoother, more consistent flow of traffic. Not only will this help keep everyone safer, but it can also reduce your travel time!
You’ll see the new digital VSL signs posted every half mile along I-465, ensuring you’re always aware of the current limit. Right now, they’re set to the standard 55 mph, but soon, you’ll notice adjustments to fit the conditions. In some cases, speeds could go as low as 35 mph when necessary, but don’t worry—it’s all to keep traffic moving safely and efficiently.
Remember, law enforcement will be actively monitoring and enforcing the posted speed limits, so stay alert and adjust your driving as needed. With these updates, Indianapolis drivers are on track for a safer, more enjoyable commute!
So buckle up and enjoy a more streamlined ride on I-465!
