I Was At Cop On A Rooftop Friday And Here Is Why You Should Care About This Event

If you drove past Dunkin' on North Green River Road this past Friday morning and noticed something a little unusual on the roof, you're not crazy, you either saw me or our friends at Evansville Police Department. Cop on a Rooftop has been an annual tradition for the last few years and it was nice to watch the sunrise and be apart of it this year.

The Evansville Police Department and the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office were enjoying their morning at the Dunkin' at 850 North Green River Road from 5 a.m. to noon as part of a statewide fundraiser. It was cool to support a specific Dunkin locally and see where we land in fundraiser.

So What Exactly Is Cop On A Rooftop

I was unsure what the event was until I showed up so let me explain. Cop on a Rooftop brings together law enforcement agencies across Indiana to support Special Olympics Indiana and this year more than 50 agencies took part across the state raising money and awareness for athletes.

The event is organized through the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which is the largest grassroots fundraising program for Special Olympics worldwide. In Indiana the program supports roughly 20,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities who train and compete at no cost. So every dollar donated at an event like this goes directly toward making that possible.

Since the event launched, Cop on a Rooftop events across Indiana have raised more than $125,000 for Special Olympics. How amazing is that?!

What It Was Like Being There

I pulled up Friday morning and the energy was genuinely so fun. Officers and deputies were out in full force, people were stopping by to donate, and yes there were donuts involved which felt very on theme for the occasion. I even was welcomed by my good friend Gina who said, "I heard you were out at the Dunkin on the radio and I had to show up and donate and say hi." Gina alone, made my day! The whole vibe was exactly what you want from a community event. Casual, welcoming, and the kind of thing where you show up for five minutes and end up staying longer because it just feels good to be there and support your community.

And of course did you really even go if you didn't take pictures?

What You Got For Donating

People who donated received a coupon for a free donut and those who donated ten dollars or more received a coupon for a free medium hot coffee. So you got to support an incredible cause and walk away with a free coffee.

Why This Event Matters

At the end of the day this is law enforcement and the community showing up for athletes who deserve every bit of support they can get. Special Olympics Indiana gives thousands of people across the state the chance to train, compete, and be part of something bigger than themselves and events like Cop on a Rooftop are a big reason that is possible.

If you missed it this year keep an eye out for it next May because it is absolutely worth stopping by even just to say hello and grab a donut for a good cause. Were you there Friday? Drop your photos in the comments because we want to see them and tag a friend who should know about this event next year!
