This Trivia Night Puts Books in Kids’ Hands All Year

This summer, I was asked to emcee a trivia night fundraiser for Imagination Library. As a mama with fond memories of reading to my baby-child, I immediately said yes! I remain a huge supporter of the cause because, like many families, we excitedly checked the mailbox every month for a book from Aunt Dolly.

My son was an early reader. He started by basically memorizing his favorite books because we read them so often. Many of them were from Aunt Dolly. There was one about a little girl called "Just One More." It was printed in English AND Spanish, and Rollins wanted me to read both of them eeeeevery time. And I did! I may not have always pronounced words correctly, but he didn't care at all.

Reading to your child helps build communication skills, recognize emotions, develop empathy and creativity; the list goes on. There are so many reasons why it is so important to get books to kids early in life. Dolly understood that every child, even those who don't have accessible libraries or can't afford books, deserves to have access to them.

Which is why she started the Imagination Library. Each local branch fundraises to be able to send the books out to families in its service area. Ours creates an annual Christmas ornament that has become a collector's item at this point. An Owensboro landmark or iconic small business is featured each year.
