Robert’s Comfort Food Has a New Evansville Location and New Menu Favorites [REVIEW]
Robert's Comfort Food Feels Like a Warm Hug to Your Belly
One of my family's favorite places to eat is Robert's. We love going there for their Friday fish fries! So, when I found out they were moving to a new location, I wondered what would change. Turns out, there were lots of upgrades, including a beautiful new location and some additions to the menu.
Located in the former Bob Evans building on the corner of Green River Rd. and Vogel Ave., we walked into the new restaurant and were greeted with upscale designs, gorgeous chandeliers, and a nice bar/waiting area.
The owner, Bart, told us he wanted a design that was fresh but comfortable. The chandeliers and bright floral walls add such a classy touch to the overall aesthetic. But the renovations are still a work in progress. Some of their furniture got lost in transit, so they are using the former restaurant's pieces, but the new stuff is on the way.
I, for one, am glad they went ahead and opened. Their food is too good not to be enjoyed regularly. In fact, they already had a wait for lunch on a Thursday. Yes, it's that good.
This Isn't Robert's First Rodeo
Owner Robert Russell has been in Evansville’s restaurant scene since his teens, with his most recent venture being The Sandbox. He opened Robert's by the River a few years ago, but has since moved the operation to Green River Rd.
Robert’s menu focuses on "Southern Comfort" food, think dishes your grandma might have made, but elevated. There's also a Friday Fish Fry and new homestyle dinners.
Robert's Comfort Food New Menu Items
First up, we tried some new menu items.

Kentucky Hot Brown
The dish was perfectly executed. Bart told me they went to the Brown Hotel to sample the original, but didn't like that the bread got soggy. So, they made a few modifications to how the sandwich was built. You still have the Texas toast, the turkey, the hollandaise, the tomato, and the bacon, but the bread stays crispy. And the bacon was nice and thick.

The Beer Breaded Fish Sandwich
I love their catfish, and their new beer-breaded fish sandwich didn't disappoint. It's a golden piece of white fish that's on a sub bun. Topped with all the fixin's and served with fries, I couldn't decide what my favorite Robert's fish dish is.

Shrimp and Grits
Creamy and luxurious, the shrimp and grits are full of flavor. The grits were well seasoned and the shrimp were large and plentiful. You can't go wrong with this one.

Chicken Livers, Mashed Potatoes, and Green Beans
Our friend Kat requested this one. If you are a fan of livers, this has to be on your list. She said they were breaded and cooked perfectly. The mashed potatoes are creamy and soft. And the bacon in the green beans is a slap-yo-mama winner winner chicken dinner!
OK, don't actually slap your mama, but do try the chicken livers if you are a chicken liver aficionado!

Chili Pot Pie
Oh, so this is really weird, but the sleeper today was the chili pot pie. Yummy chili, topped with sour cream and cheese and a sweet, crispy cornbread waffle was absolutely phenomenal. It was easily the crowd favorite and I'd totally order it again even on a 95-degree day!

Dessert
For dessert, we had a caramel bourbon cake and a dark chocolate cake with raspberry sauce. I couldn't tell you which one I liked better because they were equally delicious! Highly recommend both!

And Classics from the Last Time We Visited Robert's
MEATLOAF & MASHED POTATOES

The meatloaf is fantastic. It's well-seasoned and not greasy. Robert mentioned the bourbon glaze is housemade, not just ketchup, and it really made a difference. It was sweet, tangy, and had a subtle bourbon kick. The collards were flavorful without being overly salty, and the mashed potatoes complemented the meal perfectly. And can we just take a moment to appreciate Robert's attention to detail with all the garnishes?

PORK STEAK, BAKER, & FRIED OKRA

The pork steak, baked potato, and fried okra is a crowd favorite. Most places serve dry pork chops, and I'm not sure why because a pork steak is much more tender and flavorful. The pork steak with baked potato and fried okra followed. The fried okra was crunchy and well-prepared, adding a nice touch without being slimy or overly vegetable-like for those who aren't a fan of the greens.
FRIED CHICKEN, MASHED POTATOES WITH GRAVY, & CORN

Robert’s fried chicken is exceptional. It’s brined before coating and frying, which makes a huge difference. The chicken was moist, and the coating was perfectly crispy.

FRIED CATFISH FILLETS, SLAW, & FRIES

The catfish is light, flaky, and free from any muddy taste. The cornmeal coating was crispy, and the homemade tartar sauce was a great match. The slaw is tangy and fresh, and the fries and hush puppies were delightful. If you are a big fan of fish, every Friday, Roberts hosts a fish fry from 4-9 with all-you-can-eat fillets. *Subject to change. Check their Facebook page for details.

CLUB SANDWICH

It was everything you’d want in a club - whole grain bread, fresh meats and cheeses, and vibrant veggies. Add your favorite sauce, and you’ve got a lunchtime classic.
