The Oldest  in the Hoosier State

If you're from the Southern Indiana region then there's no doubt that you have heard of Indiana's oldest restaurant, The Log Inn.  The Log Inn first opened as a stagecoach stop and trading post in 1824.  So with the oldest restaurant in Indiana being in southern Indiana, it had me wondering, where is the oldest store in Indiana? It was a bit of a struggle to find the exact oldest store in Indiana, but it seems the overwhelming consensus is that the oldest store (that's still open) is a small general store.

The Cataract General Store

Located on an unassuming road in Spencer, Indiana sits a picturesque little roadside general store that has been serving the Hoosier state for more than 163 years.  According to Atlas Obscura, the Cataract General Store fuses vintage Americana with more modern-day items as well.  Included some food and drinks too.

The store is packed wall-to-wall with traditional general store items like local jams, cast iron skillets, and wicker baskets. There is also a collection of more modern treasures such as funky rubber ducks and toy walkie talkies. It’s also a great place to find items that showcase true Hoosier pride. Outside the store, visitors will find a small library that encourages guests to grab a book.

Walking Distance From Cataract Falls

If you've ever wanted to soak in some stunning nature sights,  Cataract Falls located on Cagles Mill Lake are a must-see and a very popular destination for Hoosier nature fans.   Cataract Falls, are located about 2 hours from Evansville and are walking distance from the Cataract General Store so you could make a whole day out of visiting this quaint old store and seeing beautiful waterfalls.  But be aware the Cataract General Store is only open on weekends Friday through Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM.
