Duckling Season

There is truly nothing cuter than seeing a mama duck waddling along with her ducklings in tow. If your yard is close to water you may even find ducks making nests in your yard.  If you do find a duck nesting in your yard, it is recommended to leave the nest alone and enjoy observing the mama and her eggs until they hatch.

According to the Fish and Wildlife Service, if you don't want a duck nesting in your yard, you can destroy the nest as long as no eggs have been laid yet.

What to do if you find a nest:

• Observe the nesting and development process of ducks.
• Only if you do not want Mallards to nest in your yard, destroy the nest before it contains eggs. You may not destroy an active nest with eggs.

• Nests with eggs and chicks are protected

  You may not destroy nests with eggs or chicks inside. After about 25 days of incubation, the chicks will hatch. Within 24 hours, the mother will lead her chicks to water. Keep children and pets away from the duck family.

They also recommend leaving a gate open if your yard is fenced in so the mama duck can easily get her ducklings out of your yard.  One Indiana elementary school has a mama duck who nests in their courtyard every year, and to help them get out of the courtyard and into the wild, they host a duckling and mama parade through the school.

Jefferson Elementary School

Middlebury Community Schools took to Facebook to share the heartwarming story of Jefferson Elementary School's annual visitor, a mama duck.  They say every year she nests in the courtyard.

On April 26th they shared the most adorable video of the mama duck parading her ducklings through the school as curious students watch.  The students do such a good job of staying quiet and just watching mama duck and her ducklings head out of the school. What a fun learning experience for these students.

A mother duck makes a nest in the Jefferson Elementary courtyard every year. After the ducklings are hatched, staff and students make a path from the courtyard to the outside while they observe the family exiting. Seeing students experience this yesterday was exciting!
