The Oldest Operating Library in Indiana

Willard Library is truly a historic gem in Evansville.  In fact, did you know that Willard Library is the oldest operating library in the state of Indiana?  It's true! Willard Library opened its doors over a century ago, in 1885.  When you visit Willard Library the very first thing you will notice is the stunning gothic architecture that makes this historical building hauntingly beautiful.  Willard Library is also home to the most notorious ghost in the region, the Grey Lady!

Who is the Grey Lady?

According to Willard Library, no one truly knows who the Grey Lady is, but it is widely speculated that she is the ghost of Louise Carpenter the daughter of Willard Library founder, Willard Carpenter.   The first sighting of The Grey Lady happened in 1937, and this haunting has been pretty well documented ever since. If you'd like to read more about the Grey Lady, you can check out an article all about her, here.

Grey Lady  Ghost Tours

If you have never taken the Grey Lady Ghost Tour at Willard Library,  I need you to stop what you're doing, and make plans to go. It's a really fun and informative tour that takes you around the library, and talks about the history of Willard Library, and the history of the Grey Lady.  Who knows, maybe the Grey Lady will make a special appearance during the tour (although, personally, I'd be okay with that not happening because we love a spooky lady, but like, at a distance).    Plus Willard Library is genuinely just a beautiful historic building, and it's really neat to get to see it after dark.

TWO Ghost Tours Already Sold Out

Willard Library took to Facebook to announce the annual Grey Lady Ghost Tours will take place this weekend from Thursday, October 26th - Saturday, October 28th.  The tours will take place at 6 PM, 7 PM, 8 PM, and 9 PM each night.  The tours are FREE to attend, but you need to register to attend the event because space is limited.
