Evansville Ranks as the City with the Worst Drivers in Indiana
A recent study identified the worst drivers in America, and the highest-rated Indiana city on that list is Evansville.
While Indiana is full of roads that offer great scenery and make for a great Sunday drive, we also have a few sketchy roads throughout the state too. Regardless of the road conditions, the one thing you always have to be cautious about is the drivers around you. That's what I constantly tell my daughter, as she is still a new driver. We've all seen some careless drivers along Indiana roadways. For some, it's almost a daily occurrence. You know what kind of drivers I am talking about: careless drivers weaving in and out of traffic, distracted drivers, speeders- the list goes on and on. You can do everything right while driving, but it's always those other drivers that you have to look out for.
Recently, Consumer Affairs used data points from the U.S. Department of Transportation, including the number of fatal crashes, the number of fatalities caused by bad driving, the number of fatalities due to driving under the influence and the prevalence of speeding in fatal accidents, Each city was scored out of 20 for each factor, with the city with the highest rate of crashes or deaths given a maximum score and others getting relative scores. Thankfully, no Indiana cities made the top five. However, if you're wondering which city has the worst drivers in America, that's Waterbury, Connecticut. Now, if you want to know which Indiana city has the worst drivers, that may or may not come as a surprise to you.
The Worst Drivers in Indiana are Found in Evansville
The city with the worst drivers in Indiana in 2026 is Evansville. This is the second year in a row where Evansville was the highest-rated Indiana city. The data is pretty startling when it comes to Evansville. In 2024, Evansville ranked 174th on the list from Consumer Affairs. In 2025, the city ranked 59th among the worst drivers in America. That's a jump of 115 positions! As far as 2026 goes, Evansville moved up six positions to the 53rd spot on the list. Not as bad as the jump from 2024 to 2025, but it is a pattern that is causing Evansville to inch higher and higher on the list.

- Total fatalities per 100K people: 13.8
- Fatalities involving DUIs per 100K people: 0.9
- Fatalities involving speeding per 100K people: 4.3
- Fatalities involving positive BAC readings per 100K people: 2.6
Evansville was not the only Indiana city to land on the list for worst drivers. Other Indiana cities among the worst drivers in America include Indianapolis, South Bend, Fishers, Fort Wayne, and Carmel. However, those are towards the bottom of the list, so I suppose you can say that Carmel, especially, is home to some of the best drivers in the country.
