Despite an increase in the number of Americans who consider themselves vegan or vegetarian, the majority of us (myself included) are meat eaters. That means most of us really don't have to worry about where to find our kind of food, or if our city is "friendly" to our particular dietary needs. That's not necessarily the case, though, for those who prefer the plant life.

I don't know about you, but I have never wondered which cities were better than others for vegetarians to live in, but the folks at WalletHub.com did, and they compiled a list of the top 100. As one might expect, a majority of the top ten cities are out west - but would it surprise you that a city in Indiana made the top 20?

Before I share some of the results, let's take a look at how this list was put together. Experts examined data from the following three main categories and some subcategory examples:

  • Affordability - the cost of vegetarian groceries and meals.
  • Diversity, Accessibility & Quality - the number of restaurants with vegan and vegetarian options, and the availability of vegetarian cooking classes.
  • Vegetarian Lifestyle - vegetable and fruit consumption, and availability of vegan & vegetarian festivals

If you want to visit the most vegan & vegetarian-friendly city in Indiana, and #16 in the country, you're gonna need to head north to Fort Wayne. On your way, you will pass through #44 on the list - Indianapolis.

If you're looking for someplace a little closer to Southern Indiana, you should know that Louisville, KY is the 15th best city in America for vegans and vegetarians. Or you can drive a few hours west to #20 on the list - St. Louis, MO.

You can scroll over the map below to see all of the cities on the list, and if you have the time and desire, check out the full report for all of the data.
