A lot gets written (myself included) about high school sports here in Southern Indiana, but it usually has to do with football, basketball, and maybe even soccer. I've also written about baseball and softball players. One high school sport that does not get the attention it deserves is swimming & diving.

The 2023-24 swimming & diving season is nearing its end, which means it is almost tournament time. Luke Smith is the Communications Specialist for the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC), and he is really good at his job. The proof is in the footage he shared on the EVSC's Facebook page of several Evansville high school divers at the city swim meet held at Deaconess Aquatic Center. Luke was so impressed by what he saw that he decided the video needed to reflect the artistry that was on display.

I asked Luke to tell me a little bit more about his approach to editing the footage. I think he sums it up perfectly...

From my perspective, I want to make sure the community sees the incredible talent that all of our different student-athletes have. Every time I record diving I'm blown away at what those students are doing, but it's all over in 1 or 2 seconds. When I started to edit I knew I wanted to do something to highlight the beauty of their dives, and slow motion was one of the easiest ways to do that. It's definitely easier to appreciate the skill they have when you see it 4x slower. Since my goal was to highlight the artistic nature of their dives, it only made sense to match that in the editing style with some of the mirrored and tracking shots, as well as the music. I think the motion tracking also helps bring the viewer into the chaos of the flips and spins.
