Many of us are still learning to navigate with the COVID-19 pandemic going on in the world.  This video was informative, factual, and what I needed to hear.  We're still allowed to go to the grocery stores, and order from our favorite restaurants. But how do we make 100% sure we do those things while limiting our exposure to COVID-19 as best we can?

The other day I brought groceries home and wasn't quite sure I was doing the right thing to make sure they're safe.  Cue Dr. Jeffrey VanWingen, a family physician in Michigan. He looked at the data from the CDC regarding COVID-19 and what we know about it so far.  He then applied what he learned from the CDC's findings on the virus and applied him to sterilizing tips he learned from being in the medical field.  He shares a lot of really great information, that made me feel better about bringing food into my home.

I highly suggest taking the time to watch his video below as he goes into a lot of detail, and answers questions you'll probably have.  But here's a few of the big takeaways:

  • Keep disinfectant on hand and wipe down counters before placing your groceries on them.
  • keep your hands washed, and sanitized when unloading groceries.
  • Keep groceries out of your home for 3 days if possible (either in the garage or in your car or outside).
  • Wash fruits and veggies with soap and water for 20 seconds as you would your hands.
  • Sanitize with disinfectant spray/wipes items that have been touched by people and have a thick packaging (AKA bags of chips, box of chicken stock, canned food items).
  • Instead of keeping the box your cereal goes in, just take the plastic containing cereal out of the box, and consider the box dirty.
  • For takeout unwrap your food and without touching it put it onto a clean plate and toss the wrapper.
  • Microwave your takeout so it's steaming.
