The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety & Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a nationwide recall of approximately 58,000,000 pounds of corn dog and sausage-on-a-stick products.

Why the Corn Dogs Are Being Recalled

The impacted products, manufactured by Texas-based The Hillshire Brands Company, are being recalled after it was discovered that the batter used to bread the products may be contaminated with wood.

The issue surfaced after multiple consumer complaints, including five reported injuries. Hillshire’s investigation indicates wooden sticks entered the line before battering, which led to wood pieces making their way into the finished product. FSIS is concerned that affected items remain in home, school, and institutional freezers.

Products and Brands Impacted by the Recall

The recall covers items packaged between March 17 and September 26, 2025, and includes several different varieties of products, including some that made their way into school cafeterias.

Affected products include:

Jimmy Dean and State Fair items were sold online to consumers and were also shipped and sold at retailers and food service providers nationwide. The products made their way to Department of Defense channels and USDA Commodity Foods donations as well. FSIS notes some products reached schools via commercial sales, not through USDA National School Lunch Program procurement.

Additionally, the "Fresh to You" items were sold in vending and breakrooms at corporate, medical, and healthcare facilities in Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

What Consumers Should Do Next

When checking for these products, look for establishment numbers “EST-582” or “P-894” on the package, or “EST. 47991” inside the USDA mark of inspection. Full product and label lists are posted by FSIS.
