Colin Kaepernick – Right to Be an Idiot?

I think it is time that I weighed in on this Colin Kaepernick situation. My opinion might rub some people the wrong way, but remember, it’s just one man’s opinion. So here we go.

I like to think that I am usually a pretty level-headed guy. For the most part I don’t have a problem seeing both sides of any given topic, and it takes a lot to offend me. And after giving it some thought, here’s what I have to say about Kaepernick. I think he’s an idiot…but he also has the right to be an idiot.

I love our national anthem, and I’m kind of an old fuddy duddy about it. I think everyone should stand, everyone should remove hats, and everyone should put their hand over their heart. And I’ve gone on the record in the past that I am NOT a fan of performers over singing the anthem. It is a beautiful and powerful song just as it is written.

I also love our military and all of our service members, past and present. They do a job that I could never do. I’ll admit that I am too big of a coward to ever do their job. They protect us and they keep us safe. I can certainly understand a service member being upset over Kaepernick’s actions. I will never try to convince them not to be.

Having said all that, and let me finish this thought…isn’t one of the greatest aspects of our country the rights and freedoms we have? Men and women have fought and died so that those rights and freedoms remain intact. So Kaepernick has the right to not stand if he doesn’t want to. We also then have the right to ridicule him like we’re doing. We all have rights, but that doesn’t mean there are no repercussions for our actions. I think that’s where people get confused.

So as I said initially, I think Colin Kaepernick is an idiot. I don’t agree with what he did and I think there are other ways to make your point, and more importantly, to make a difference. But, I also have to support the fact that he has every right to sit, stand, squat, pout, pick his nose or suck his thumb during the Star Spangled Banner.
