Adam Warlock was a big, albeit mysterious, reveal at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, although we never saw his face. Instead, his body (and whoever will be playing him) was hidden inside a golden cocoon, supposedly engineered by Ayesha, leader of the Sovereigns. He won’t be appearing in Avengers: Infinity War, James Gunn has stressed, so we’ve a while left before we see Adam in the flesh. But today concept artist Ian Joyner debuted a closer look at Adam’s cocoon, and it honestly looks very scary.

This closer look comes courtesy of Joyner’s ArtStation account, where he also explained a bit about his process.

I did a lot of passes on the Cocoon for the end tag of Guardians (SPOILERS!), which was a lot of fun as I always loved when they showed up in the cosmic books from Marvel! The final look shown here had lot of golden hues/tech that tied into the Sovereigns’ world and really looked awesome on screen.

I definitely get an H.R. Giger vibe from this — give it a few coats of black paint, and it would look right at home aboard the Nostromo. The cocoon can be seen in the last of Guardians Vol. 2’s five post-credits scenes here, where Ayesha introduces it as “the next step in [the Sovereigns’] evolution.” She says she’s making Adam in order to destroy the Guardians of the Galaxy, but Adam Warlock is, normally, a hero, so let’s hope he switches sides eventually.
