Widow Sues Indiana Cemetery for Rejecting NASCAR Headstone

An Indiana church is now facing a lawsuit because one of its parishioners says that they flat-out rejected her request to erect a headstone on her husband’s grave because of the secular and seemingly “redneck” connotations behind the monument itself.

In an attempt to properly memorialize the legacy of her husband, Shannon Carr dropped nearly $10,000 on a granite headstone that was branded with depictions of wildlife, dogs and a few full-color logos of the Indianapolis Colts and NASCAR racing.

However, according to several reports, the St. Joseph Parish Cemetery in North Vernon, Indiana essentially told Carr that if she wanted a tacky and classless (our words, not theirs) headstone put on her husband’s grave, she would have to dig him up and have him buried somewhere else.

Earlier last week, Carr filed a lawsuit because she says that even though the cemetery now claims to have specific standards put into place in regards to the appearance of headstones placed on their property, she was never made aware of those regulations until after the maker of the monument attempted to have it installed two years ago.

Reverend Jonathan Meyer says that the church has always had rules pertaining headstones, but there was never any need to strictly enforce them – until now.
