Last week, I did a two part interview with Dave and Brock, members of the Evansville Polics Department’s newly created Meth Suppression Unit. They told me about how they are now doing surveillance on local pharmacies looking for ‘smurfers’. That term is used to refer to people who purchase pseudoephedrine products for the meth maker.

“Smurfers” often travel in groups, buying pseudoephedrine products at as many pharmacies as possible before heading back to the meth maker to either sell them the needed meth ingredient or trading it for the finished product as most assuredly most ‘smurfers’ are also meth heads as well.

Anyway, yesterday Brock and Dave’s surveillance of a pharmacy paid off, leading to a high speed chase through two counties.

The chase began about 4:09 p.m. and ended about 20 minutes later near Kansas and Asbury Cemetery roads, according to Evansville-Vanderburgh County Central Dispatch.

EPD identified the driver as Joey Young and said he was also registered sex offender who was being sought for violating parole.

City Cops attempted to stop the car, a Dodge Avenger, at Morgan Avenue and Interstate 164 but Young refused to pull over. The chase reached speeds up to 80 mph on the interstate, and continued when Young got off on Boonville-New Harmony Road at Exit 15.

It then continued on gravel roads in the Bluegrass Fish & Wildlife Area in Warrick County. The chase ended when Young jumped out of the moving car right before it was stopped by a cable barrier across a private road.. Young then fled across a field and was apprehended by a K9.

He was taken to a hospital for dog bite treatment and was expected to face charges of resisting law enforcement, as well as drug-related charges. Good job EPD!
