While it likely won’t come as a surprise to Pearl Jam fans, the band’s new disc ‘Lightning Bolt’ landed in the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart, earning Pearl Jam their fifth No. 1 debut.

‘Lightning Bolt’ sold an impressive 166,000 copies during its first week of sales joining 2009’s ‘Backspacer,’ 1996’s ‘No Code,’ 1994’s ‘Vitalogy’ and 1993’s ‘Vs’ as No. 1 Pearl Jam albums. ‘Lightning Bolt’ also garnered the largest debut sales week for a rock album since last November.

Baseball fans tuning in to catch the Boston Red Sox battle the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, which begins tonight, will get the added bonus of hearing Pearl Jam, as well. The band signed on to serve up 48 songs from their extensive catalog to be used throughout the Series.

The union between Pearl Jam and Major League Baseball is a perfect fit. Frontman Eddie Vedder has always been a fan of the game, and more importantly a fan of the Chicago Cubs. Pearl Jam even played a show at Wrigley Field, the home of the Chicago Cubs, back in July.

In a new interview with Billboard, Vedder talked a little bit about his beloved team and love for the game. “I never went to a World Series, I was waiting for the Cubs to get in,” Vedder shared. “Then a few years ago, when we [PJ] played the [Philadelphia] Spectrum the last night, it was quite a confluence of events.” He continued, explaining, “It was the last night of anything in the Spectrum and they were going to blow it up after the show, and it was Halloween, and the World Series was going on across the street, Yankees and the Phillies. The next night I actually went to the Phillies/Yankees World Series. That was it. But I’m going to go to a Cubs World Series game — and I’m taking care of my health in order to do so.”

Sounds like MLB found the right band to serve up the soundtrack to the World Series!
