Paramount Kills Production on ‘Friday the 13th’ Reboot

Friday the 13th

Paramount performed a little maintenance on their calendar last night, removing both World War Z 2 and the repeatedly delayed Friday the 13th reboot from their upcoming release schedule — but that’s not all. The studio has reportedly completely shut down production on their new Friday the 13th project, which was set to begin filming in just six weeks. With no release date (again) and pre-production halted, it seems that Jason Voorhees’ revival may be delayed indefinitely.

THR’s report leaves the fate of Friday the 13th somewhat hazy, but for now it seems that the long-developing reboot of the classic horror franchise has been taken off the table. Platinum Dunes was producing the project (they also backed the remake in 2009), with Breck Eisner (The Crazies) set to direct. Following multiple delays, changes in creative direction, and director / screenwriter shake-ups, the film was set to hit theaters this October 13.

The latest report speculates that the poor opening weekend for the similarly oft-delayed Rings, which opened to $13 million on a $25 million budget, may have given Paramount serious doubts about the Friday the 13th reboot. Both films were intended to revive their respective franchises, but the box-office returns on Rings have made it pretty clear that audiences just aren’t that interested in seeing the franchise continue.

This is all speculation, of course, as a source told THR that Friday the 13th would attract a different sect of the genre crowd. Although the future of the reboot remains unclear, another source close to the project was only able to offer that “the production was not ready to go at this date.”
