Downtown Evansville Indiana to Host Viewing Party for 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

There has been a lot of buzz about the April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse that will darken the skies over Indiana, as well as Illinois, and Kentucky, providing a breathtaking celestial spectacle and Downtown Evansville is getting ready to host a viewing party!

As we gear up for the solar eclipse on April 8th, Downtown Evansville and many of its small businesses will host a viewing party along Riverside Drive.

This once-in-a-lifetime event will be one that you do not want to miss and experiencing it along our beautiful downtown will make it all the more memorable.

When and Where

Riverside Drive will be closed to vehicular traffic to create a prime viewing spot for the total solar eclipse. Totality is expected to last for just over 3 minutes in Evansville and will begin at approximately 2:02 pm CST. The viewing party is planned from 11 am until 4 pm.

Get Your Viewing Glasses

Of course, in order to safely view a solar eclipse, you are going to need eclipse-viewing glasses. Downtown Evansville has partnered with Evansville Eyecare Associates to provide eclipse viewing glasses for sale for just $3.00 a pair. Glasses can be purchased here and then picked up at the Innovation Pointe Building located at 318 Main Street.

Viewing Safety

If you attain viewing glasses from another source, be sure that they meet the safety requirements outlined by NASA. Your solar filters should bear the ISO 12312-2:2015 certification and you should confirm that the manufacturer's name and address are printed on the product. NASA also advised that you avoid using filters that lack certification information, have torn or scratched lenses, loose frames, or were made before 2015.
