With 'Dexter' season 8 set to be the last outing for Showtime's beloved serial killer, we wouldn't have been surprised if the final episodes took a more introspective focus, positioning Dexter himself as the focus of the season rather than a particular big bad. Since crime never stops in Miami however, we've learned what surgical new killer will plague Miami Metro this time around, and how the supporting characters will deal with the big change!

Many fans would argue that no subsequent villain, neither Doomsday or the Phantom Arsonist lived up to Jon Lithgow's iconic Trinity Killer, but it seems the final season of 'Dexter' may have one more big bad to land on the table before the end of the series. Via Entertainment Weekly, we've learned that the new serial killer threat plaguing Miami (apart from Dexter himself, of course) will take the name "The Brain Surgeon."

So while the Brain Surgeon busies himself removing pieces of his victim's brains (which nicely ties into the arrival of mysterious neuropsychiatrist Dr. Evelyn Vogel), the rest of Miami Metro will have plenty more on their plate. The death of Captain LaGuerta in season 7 finale "Surprise, Motherf---er" will cast a large shadow over the season, luring (now) Lieutentant Batista (David Zayas) out of retirement, even with LaGuerta's case apparently closed.

So too will we spend a bit more time with Masuka (C.S. Lee) this season, whose home and personal life had been somewhat glossed over in the past. “There’s going to be some personal stuff you’ll see from Masuka that you haven’t seen before,” Lee told the publication. “It has something to do with his personal life that people have wondered about.”

In addition to Charlotte Rampling's Dr. Vogel, ‘Dexter’ season 8 will feature appearances from Kenny (‘The Shield’) Johnson, the return of Yvonne Strahovski‘s Hannah McKay, ‘24‘ villain Julian Sands as a wealthy international businessman, Bethany Joy (‘One Tree Hill’) Lenz as Dexter’s new neighbor Cassie and ‘Last Resort‘ star Darri Ingolfsson as her antique-dealing love interest,  Rhys (Entourage) Coiro as a bail jumper on Deb’s radar, ‘The Walking Dead‘ star Nick Gomez as a hitman that goes up against Deb, and ‘The Boondock Saints’ star Sean Patrick Flanery as ex-cop-turned-private-eye Jacob Elway.

The final season of 'Dexter' will kick off June 30, but in the meantime what say you? Are you intrigued by the idea of a new big bad, or would you prefer the final season focus on the existing characters?
