For me, Mexican food is right up there with pizza, in the category of “food that always sounds good.” No what I mean? And leading the way for my taste buds is the burrito. Which one is your favorite? I’ve asked my stomach to make a list of my 5 favorites.

The word burrito literally means “little donkey” when translated. I’m not sure how or when “little donkey” suddenly turned into a tortilla filled with delicious ingredients like beans, meats and cheeses. Don’t know, don’t care.

I know there are a lot of great Mexican restaurants and a lot of great burritos to choose from, but I can only choose from the burritos that I’ve eaten. So forgive me if my list doesn’t include every joint in town. In fact, I would love to know about YOUR favorite burrito, so I can give it a try.

1. El Charro – Burrito Jalisco

This burrito is named after the Mexican state of Jalisco and it’s #1 on my list. Just so happens that El Charro is also my favorite Mexican restaurant in Evansville. The burrito Jalisco is huge, and filled with chicken (my choice), beans, lettuce and sour cream. Then it’s smothered in El Charro’s yummy cheese sauce. Honestly, I would eat my shoe if it were covered in that white queso!

And by the way, you can find the same burrito at El Charro’s sister restaurant El Patron. There it’s called the burrito Indiana.

2. Los Bravos – Burrito Grande

Los Bravos comes in a close 2nd place. You really can’t lose here either. Their burrito grande is very similar to the Jalisco at El Charro. We’re talking about delicious authentic Mexican grub, so it just came down to my personal preference.

3. Moe’s – Joey Bag of Donuts

I realize this is a chain restaurant, and probably one of the furthest things from “authentic,” but dammit their burritos are good! It’s like the Subway of American/Mexican quisine. Gimme a Joey with ground beef, pinto beans, rice, sour cream and queso and I am a happy (and stuffed) little boy.

4. Chava’s – Build a Burrito

Chava’s is a relatively new, and somewhat unknown restaurant, but you should definitely check it out. It’s on First Avenue near North Park. Think Moe’s on a smaller scale. A smaller building, a smaller staff and a more authentic feel. Same concept though…build the burrito however you want.

5. Hacienda – Wet Burrito

I feel like I’d get run out of town if I didn’t include the famous wet burrito from Hacienda. Hacienda certainly isn’t my first choice for Mexican food - I just prefer a little bit more authentic grub – but the wet burrito doesn’t disappoint. Take a tortilla the size of my forearm and fill it up with ground beef, then cover it with cheese and Hacienda’s secret sauce and you’ll be full for a day and a half.

So what burritos am I missing? What burritos do I need to try next?
