Tom Hardy isn’t a name one easily lures back to TV these days, at least not on the American side, but an eight-part miniseries venture between FX and the BBC gets the Mad Max: Fury Road star grunting under a crazy hat, and naked in the snow straightaway. Take it in, as FX debuts Hardy’s new Ridley Scott-produced period drama.

Still in production with an eye toward debuting in 2017, the series stems from an idea between Hardy and his father Chips, starring House of Cards vet Michael Kelly, Game of Thrones stars Jonathan Pryce and Oona Chaplin, along with David Hayman. So reads the official synopsis:

Set in 1814, Taboo follows James Keziah Delaney, a man who has been to the ends of the earth and comes back irrevocably changed. Believed to be long dead, he returns home to London from Africa to inherit what is left of his father’s shipping empire and rebuild a life for himself. But his father’s legacy is a poisoned chalice, and with enemies lurking in every dark corner, James must navigate increasingly complex territories to avoid his own death sentence. Encircled by conspiracy, murder, and betrayal, a dark family mystery unfolds in a combustible tale of love and treachery.

Hardy also executive produces with Ridley Scott and Locke alum Steven Knight. Watch the trailer again above, and consider your own feelings on Hardy’s hat.
