The music world is in mourning with the news of the death of The Muffs' singer-guitarist Kim Shattuck at the age of 56 after a battle with ALS.

The news was relayed by Melanie Vammen, one of Shattuck's bandmates in the Muffs, who had shared an Instagram post from Shattuck's husband Kevin Sutherland.

“This morning the love of my life Kim passed peacefully in her sleep after a two year struggle with ALS. I am the man I am today because of her. She will live with all of us through her music, our shared memories and in her fierce creative spirit. I love you forever my Kimmy. Thank you for sharing your life…,” said Sutherland. "My heart is broken," also added Vammen in her posting. The Muffs had recorded six studio albums and have their seventh, No Holiday, en route on Oct. 18.

In addition to The Muffs, Shattuck served a brief stint with the Pixies, joining the group in 2013 on bass after the exit of Kim Deal. Shattuck had also made guest turns on songs by NOFX ("Lori Meyers"), Bowling for Soup ("I'll Always Remember You (That Way)" and The Dollyrots ("Some Girls").

In the aftermath of Shattuck's death, The Coolies, one of Kim's bands, have announced a new pressing of their debut benefit EP Uh Oh It’s… The Coolies! The Coolies and their record label, Wicked Cool Records, will donate 100 percent of record sales proceeds to support research for the ALS Association Golden West Chapter.
