After the way the Slayer’s “Pride in Prejudice” video concluded, you could bet there was more blood to spill for Wyatt (Jason Trost), the central character of director BJ McDonnell’s trilogy of music videos. With Slayer counting down to their final performance at Los Angeles’ Fabulous Forum later this month, the timing was right for McDonnell to bring the hyper violent story to a close in The Repentless Killology.

When we left off, Wyatt had just emerged a free man after being set up by his former associates in The Hand Brotherhood to take out a fellow inmate (Danny Trejo). Instead of following their orders, he turned the tables on them, but paid the ultimate price as his pregnant girlfriend, Gina, was slaughtered right in front of his eyes. Now, with the help of his fellow inmate, Wyatt has revenge on his mind, attempting to seek out the ruthless Luther, who ultimately set Wyatt’s journey in motion.

For new viewers, McDonnell initially lays out the narrative of the three videos – “You Against You,” “Repentless” and “Pride in Prejudice,” this time in chronological order, before setting up The Repentless Killology's final chapter. We revisit some of the bloody journey and crafty kills in short order, setting up that Wyatt is a bad, bad man with blood on his hands and revenge on his mind.

McDonnell saves some of his finest kills for last, as Wyatt seeks out a number of Hand Brotherhood associates and dispatches of them in cringeworthy fashion. No body part is spared, as eyeballs are removed, hands get hacked and heads get (axe) split, but perhaps the finest kill of all involves a truck, a tree and one unfortunate soul who succumbs to the tension of the situation.

Slayer are brought back into the fold when Wyatt learns that Luther will be at the band’s Los Angeles Forum performance, a place where he best not show his face. As it turns out, Luther has plans for our thrash heroes, but Wyatt’s intervention, albeit not in the way the audience expected, brings the revenge quest to its ultimate violent conclusion.

Given that Slayer’s The Repentless Killology is a combination of the visual narrative combined with a full performance live from The Forum, McDonnell does a solid job of marrying his story to Wayne Isham’s wonderfully shot concert footage. We catch a glimpse of the set closer “Angel of Death” in McDonnell’s film and the creators find a way to include the band members in the story and then eventually make the transition for those who came primarily to view the concert portion of this presentation.

Isham and his crew do a masterful job of capturing Slayer in their element, giving better than a front-row seat for viewers who can watch up close the precise and nimble fingers of Kerry King and Gary Holt as they deliver some of metal’s most killer riffs. The concert portion also captures the feel of the crowd, showing you some of the feverish circle pits and the exuberance of Slayer fans enjoying the hard-hitting release.

The Repentless Killology opens with a Q&A with the band members, with the guys specifically addressing what it meant for them to play the Forum. As Tom Araya revealed, his initial goal with Slayer was to put out a record, so to see their journey get to a point where they could actually sell out one of the most historic venues where they sewed their musical roots definitely impacted them. That’s paid off later in Isham’s concert portion, where Araya appears moved by the response of the crowd and can be seen taking in the moment.
