News can spread very quickly on social media, and sometimes just a headline can lead to rumors that are not accurate. I'm here to clear up a rumor about a locally-owned business we all love - Lic's Deli & Ice Cream.

Lic's Deli & Ice Cream Closes West Side Location

The correct part of the story about Lic's Ice Cream & Deli is that yes, the West Side location on Virginia Street has closed permanently. That location was the third to open in Evansville, Indiana 47 years ago. Of course, back then this area was really known as the West Side. Now when we refer to the West Side, we usually mean West on the LLoyd.

I spoke with Kara Combs, she is the co-owner of Lic's, and she was happy to let the Tri-State know that the other 7 locations of Lic's Deli & Ice Cream are NOT closing.

"We have all of these people that work for us, we are not just closing! We just closed the one location, but there are seven other locations. Some of them are within two miles of the closed location. So, other than being sad for our West Siders, nothing is changing. We're still here."

The Virginia Street building is now for sale. Kara tells me that they do not have any plans to build or open a new location somewhere else on the West Side.

Owensboro friends can rest easy. Your Lic's is staying open.

Still Scooping Since 1950

I'm always proud to say that Lic's was my first real job with a paycheck. Not to brag, but I was even promoted to Group Leader within a week. Seriously, I loved my time at Lic's. I could pop in and work a shift today if they'd let me. I probably shouldn't say that too loud!

There are not a lot of businesses that can say that they are not only locally owned but also family-owned. I am super excited to hear that the other seven Lic's Deli & Ice Cream locations are not closing.

I find looking back on the way things used to be fascinating. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I'm living through the current time period. The conveniences of answering any question we have in seconds, or ordering practically anything we want or need and having it delivered to our doorstep is pretty sweet. But, there is something fun about seeing how things around us have evolved. As an Evansville native, and spending quite a bit of my time in downtown Evansville (that's where the station is located), I've always appreciated the older architecture of the buildings around the area. So, I dug into the Willard Library Archives to see how a few of those areas look now compared to then. Some have changed a little, others quite a bit, and a few don't even exist any more.
