When you look up the word “diversity,” the simplest definition you’ll find is just one word: variety. But over time, that meaning has grown into something much bigger. Today, when most of us hear “diversity,” we think about bringing together people from different social and ethnic backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, and life experiences – and making sure everyone has a seat at the table.

How This Study Measured a City's Diversity

Recently, WalletHub took a closer look at diversity across the country. They ranked the Most and Least Diverse Cities in America and even examined the economic impact diversity has on each community. To do it, they analyzed data from 501 of the nation’s largest cities across these five major diversity categories:

  • Socioeconomic Diversity Ranking
  • Cultural Diversity Ranking
  • Economic Diversity Ranking
  • Household Diversity Ranking
  • Religious Diversity Ranking

Where Indiana Cities Ranked

The study included 10 Indiana cities – some obviously scored better than others, but none of them should be happy with the results. Let’s take a look at those rankings. We’ll go from least to most diverse. Keep in mind, this is out of a total of 501 cities.

  • #446 - Bloomington
  • #440 - Carmel
  • #439 - Fishers
  • #428 - Lafayette
  • #410 - Gary
  • #397 - Evansville
  • #237 - South Bend
  • #164 - Fort Wayne
  • #83 - Hammond
  • #76 - Indianapolis

Which States Ranked Highest and Lowest

According to the study, you’ll find the country’s most diverse cities in Maryland and Texas – both states made up the top five. On the flip side, the data shows there’s room for improvement in New Hampshire, where five of the 10 least diverse cities in the country are located.

You can scroll over the map below to see how the rest of the country is ranked (good luck navigating 501 little dots), but that number is only part of the story. You really should take a look at the FULL REPORT to get a better idea of where and how your city can become more diverse.
