National Weather Service Issues Cold Weather Advisory for Southern Indiana
As we are still trying to get through the ice and snow that fell Sunday and Monday, now Southern Indiana is forecasted to have extremely dangerous cold temperatures.
Dangerous Temperatures
The record for the lowest recorded temperature on January 8 in Evansville was -8 back in 1968. Our area will be close to that record low tonight and overnight into Thursday. As of 10 am today almost 20,000 CenterPoint Energy customers are still without power. And while CenterPoint has assembled a huge team to restore power, some folks might have to suffer a few more nights in the cold.

Cold Weather Advisory: Prepare for Subzero Wind Chills
The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for parts of Southern Illinois, Southern Indiana, and parts of Kentucky. This advisory will be in effect from 9 pm Wednesday, January 8 through Thursday, January 9 at 6 am.
With wind chills expected to feel as low as -2 degrees, it’s vital for residents—especially those still dealing with power outages from the recent ice storm—to take precautions.
Winter Storm Recovery: Power Outage Safety Tips
For those still without power due to the 2025 Ice Storm, follow these essential tips to protect yourself and your loved ones:
1. Be Cautious with Heat Sources
- Avoid using candles or space heaters as they pose a serious fire risk.
- Instead, stay warm by bundling up and keeping doors closed. Add towels in cracks to block drafts.
2. Use Portable Generators Safely
- Only operate portable generators outdoors, at least 20 feet away from doors, windows, or garages. This helps prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
3. Check on Neighbors
- Once you’ve ensured your family’s safety, check on elderly neighbors or those with limited mobility. A quick check-in can make a world of difference during extreme conditions.
