Kentucky Has Its Own Stonehenge, But It Also Has a ‘Thronehenge’
If you've never traveled Route 66, you should at least treat yourself to the occasional preview. There are many available.
Kentucky Stonehenge
I'm leading with that because I can't help but believe that the wonderfully oddball attractions that line this iconic highway were the inspiration for any number of similar sites you'll find in every state in the union.
Kentucky is no exception. Whether Route 66 was the inspiration for what the Commonwealth has to offer in this category remains to be seen. Whatever the reasons, they make road trips that much more fun. And if one of those road trips takes you through Munfordville, you owe it to yourself to visit Kentucky's very own Stonehenge. You'll find it on the grounds of Chester Fryer's estate. He created it.
Kentucky's 'Thronehenge'
Now, hop in your vehicle, find U.S. Highway 68, and head west until you reach Calvert City, Kentucky. That's where you'll find another Kentucky "-henge." It's not the official name, but this collection at Apple Valley Hillbilly Garden and Toyland has been assigned this most appropriate moniker. Yes, a circular collection of toilets graces the grounds of a very unusual Kentucky museum.
No, "Thronehenge" isn't the only or even main reason to visit this unique museum, but I bet you'll take a picture of it before you leave. I also believe you'll be there longer than you think you will. Proprietor Keith Holt has assembled the largest collection of toys I have ever seen. I don't know if it's the record holder, but he has a lot of toys.
Enjoy your quirky Kentucky road trip, and especially the "-henges."
