What Is the Meaning of a Five Pointed Star on the Exterior of Houses and Barns?
As I drive around, especially through rural areas, I’ve noticed a lot of houses featuring those big five-pointed stars mounted on the exterior. You see them a lot between here and Bloomington off I-69, and I’ve always wondered what they signify.
It turns out there isn't a single, clear explanation online, but plenty of theories abound. Some suggest they’re structural, others say they’re decorative, and some think they might indicate membership in a particular group or organization. What I do know is that they’re called barn stars.
According to Wikipedia, barn stars aren't structural at all; they’re primarily decorative. One explanation I found mentioned that they’re considered symbols of good luck, especially in Pennsylvania and among German heritage farming communities, which might explain why they’re more common in rural settings.
Originally, these stars were often found on barns—hence the name—but now they seem to be popping up more frequently on houses. Personally, I think they’re quite charming! I’d love to hear what they mean to the people who display them, as I’m sure everyone has their own unique story or interpretation. What are your thoughts?
