While you want a PIN number that you can remember, you don't want one that hackers will have no problem cracking...like these.

My sixteen-year-old just got her first debit card this week. My wife and I explained to her the basics of how to use a debit card responsibly. One of those things we talked to her about was coming up with a strong PIN number. You want to come up with a PIN that is unique enough that nobody can guess it. However, you don't want it to be so random that you'll forget it the next day. That could make coming up with a strong PIN a little bit of a tricky process.

Here's the thing...PIN numbers aren't just a debit card thing. You use PIN numbers for the security lock on your phone, tablets, and security systems. Some vehicles even have a PIN code on the door that you can enter to unlock it. So, if you don't want anyone getting into or hacking your stuff, avoiding easily hackable PINs is a necessity.

When it comes to PIN numbers, we should all know the basic rules: don’t use your birthday, avoid the classic 1-2-3-4, and avoid the use of repeated digits like 1111. While those might be easy for you to remember, they are also easy for hackers to crack. So, since we just had the talk with our daughter about the importance of creating a strong, yet memorable PIN, it got me thinking, what are the most commonly used PINs in Indiana? The ones hackers are most likely to try first?

The Most Commonly Hacked PINs

As it turns out, there's a long list of commonly hacked PINs. I was actually surprised, looking at it, that there were numbers that I would have never thought of that would be easy for hackers to crack. A recent report released a list of PINs that are super common and very easy for cybercriminals to crack. The majority of them appear to be people's birth years. So, if your PIN number shows up on this list, it might be a good time to change things up!
